MAKING VISIBLE THE INVISIBLE
A project by UNICEF & Domestic Data Streamers
During The General Assembly of the United Nations in September 2016 the heads of State and Government from around the world will discuss the role that data will play in measuring progress towards the future.
Issues that go unmeasured often remain unresolved. Understanding children's current situation and their problems is vital when dealing with future problems in our society, which is why we need to improve the way we gather and process children's related data in order to make the better the future.

The Data, Research and Policy division from UNICEF and Domestic Data Streamers have been working together to transform the lack of data into a tangible experience, shedding light on the current situation and on the vital information we are missing today.

Better data, Better lives
Without basic facts and real data, we cannot assure equal rights and a fair start in life for children around the world.

Below, you can find nine examples of situations in which we are missing information. But it will only be until we have more data, that we will be able to begin solving those problems.

SAFETY

We still don’t know how many children are forced to work under the worst forms of child labour including slavery, trafficking and prostitution.


We don’t know how many children around the world are recruited and used by armed forces and groups in conflict.


Only about one in every three countries have the minimum quality data in child mortality.

EDUCATION

We know how many children attend to school and how many do not. But do we know how many are actually learning?



We lack critical international figures on refugee child health and education.


One in three countries do not have official statistics about child poverty.

HEALTH

Since 2010, only half of all countries have data about mothers giving birth by the age of 18.


One in two countries around the world lack recent data on overweight children.


In most countries we still don’t know if the water is really safe to drink.



Not having enough data prevents us from identifying obstacles that need to be overcome to ensure a happy and safe childhood to every child.
A Time Travel Project
We want our message to the United Nations General Assembly to be loud and clear. We need to generate awareness about the big responsibility they have in their hands by making each and every person from every background and culture face this reality. Thereupon, we introduce a new kind of Time Machine.


The Time Machine is an experience that aims to make the world leaders and other participants of the General Assembly, look back to their own childhood and understand how they can change the childhood of millions of children today.

The Commitment

Even if this pledge is not legally binding to anyone, it can mean a lot to many. Each participant will sign a commitment pledge between themselves and themselves as a child commiting to improve children's related data that will be will be publicly exhibited.

Album
Children often remain unheard because we lack the data to give them voice. Therefore we have developed a software that transforms each participant’s data into a personalised song created from their childhood memories. Still today a lot of anonymous childhoods remain in silence. We want them to understand that they can change this silence.

It is in our hands to create a world where every child has an equal chance of being heard and seen. Children are the future, but the future is bleak if the present is neglected. And they do not count if they are not counted.
